Thursday's Gospel

Gospel - Mt 10:7-15

Jesus said to his Apostles:
“As you go, make this proclamation:
‘The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.’
Cure the sick, raise the dead,
cleanse the lepers, drive out demons.
Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.
Do not take gold or silver or copper for your belts;
no sack for the journey, or a second tunic,
or sandals, or walking stick.
The laborer deserves his keep.
Whatever town or village you enter, look for a worthy person in it,
and stay there until you leave.
As you enter a house, wish it peace.
If the house is worthy,
let your peace come upon it;
if not, let your peace return to you.
Whoever will not receive you or listen to your words
(go outside that house or town and shake the dust from your feet.
Amen, I say to you, it will be more tolerable
for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment
than for that town

There was a little old lady, who every morning. stepped onto her front
porch, raised her arms to the sky, and shouted: "PRAISE THE LORD!"

One day an atheist moved into the house next door. He became irritated at
the little old lady.

Every morning he'd step onto his front porch after her and yell: "THERE IS
NO LORD!"

Time passed with the two of them carrying on this way every day.

One morning, in the middle of winter, the little old lady stepped onto her
front porch and shouted: "PRAISE THE LORD! Please Lord, I have no food and
I am starving, provide for me, oh Lord!

The next morning she stepped onto her porch and there were two huge bags
of groceries sitting there.

"PRAISE THE LORD!" she cried out. "HE HAS PROVIDED GROCERIES FOR ME!"

The atheist neighbor jumped out of the hedges and shouted:

"THERE IS NO LORD. I BOUGHT THOSE GROCERIES!!"

The little old lady threw her arms into the air and shouted: "PRAISE THE
LORD! HE HAS PROVIDED ME WITH GROCERIES AND MADE THE DEVIL PAY FOR THEM!

When we hear God’s word, we are called to respond. Jesus basically says that people who refuse God’s word bring on their own condemnation. So, we either respond or we don’t- there is no sort of or a little bit here. Instead, we are to respond fully and completely. The result of responding is joy in Him. But He also asks for more from us- He asks us to share that joy, His word, with others. I hadn’t thought of that much until recently. I’d thought of my faith as something to be held privately and quietly. My sharing would be in deed only. I find it easy to give in action, but to openly share beliefs requires vulnerability. That’s hard, and I like the anon thing.
