April Fool's Day

Someone (I know who) has already played an April Fool's joke on me - they moved my "Redskins fans only" parking sign to another spot in the rectory lot. Unfortunately, it is the spot that our housekeeper has been parking in every day for years and years. Today, with the sign there, she parked in the spot next to hers...!

FLORIDA COURT SETS ATHEIST HOLY DAY

In Florida , an atheist created a case against the upcoming Easter and Passover holy days. He hired an attorney to bring a discrimination case against Christians, Jews and observances of their holy days. The argument was that it was unfair that atheists had no such recognized days.

The case was brought before a judge. After listening to the passionate presentation by the lawyer, the judge banged his gavel declaring, "Case dismissed!"

The lawyer immediately stood objecting to the ruling saying, "Your honor, how can you possibly dismiss this case? The Christians have Christmas, Easter and others. The Jews have Passover, Yom Kippur and Hanukkah, yet my client and all other atheists have no such holidays."

The judge leaned forward in his chair saying, "But you do. Your client, counsel, is woefully ignorant."

The lawyer said, "Your Honor, we are unaware of any special observance or holiday for atheists."

The judge said, "The calendar says April 1st is April Fools Day. Psalm 14:1 states, 'The fool says in his heart, there is no God.' Thus, it is the opinion of this court, that if your client says there is no God, then he is a fool. Therefore, April 1st is his day. Court is adjourned.

Wait a minute. If atheists get a holiday, then surely agnostics do too. They are not the same. The atheist has an affirmative belief in the nonexistence of God. The agnostic is not quite that arrogant; the agnostic says that while he has no experience or knowledge of God's presence in his life, he cannot say that there is no God. So, the agnostic confesses ignorance and keeps the window open ever so slightly so that the Holy Spirit has a way in if he should come knocking. So we agnostics do not deserve to have to share April Fools Day with the atheists. The open window distinguishes us from the atheists. I propose that the agnositcs' holiday be the feast day of St. Monica, which is
May 4th. St. Monica was the mother or St. Augustine, and she fasted and prayed fervently for years for her wayward son's conversion, which of course happened, and the human race is better for it. She also prayed constantly for the conversion of her errant husband, who converted on his death bed. She is sometimes referred to as the patron saint of conversions (as well as motherhood). Her feast day should be the agnostics' holiday because St. Monica had a passion for pulling people on the fence, like agnostics, over to the right side.
