On retreat
I'm on silent retreat (shhh!) this week at a hermitage. Please pray for me as I will pray for you!

A Prayer for a Priest
You asked for our prayers,
during your days as a hermit,
so here are my thoughts,
that required no permit.
I asked our dear Lord,
“How do I pray for a Priest?”
He paused and then said,
“His human nature has not ceased.”
“He feels pain in his body,
and also in his heart,
especially for the lost,
searching for a new start.
So that got me thinking,
about the demands of your day,
and all the emotions,
that come into play.
The homeless tend to wander,
not knowing where to go,
for the love and forgiveness,
your open arms show.
Moving on to morning mass,
where the faces are few,
scattered in and between
the many empty pews.
Their eyes look so focused,
your message they await,
surely daily attendance,
helps determine their fate!
But no, don’t you worry,
each knows it takes more,
than kneeling and genuflecting
after walking through church doors.
You celebrate the sacraments,
a life welcomed through Baptism,
to belong to a family,
blessed with water and chrism.
And later in the day,
off to a wedding you might be,
consecrating a loving couple,
becoming one, with great glee.
Now let’s not forget,
that you too can have moods,
I’d bet you ten dollars,
you have favorite foods.
Oh yes, your free time,
a basketball court you’ll be at,
shooting some hoops,
trying not to get fat.
So after writing these thoughts,
I started to see,
that prayers meant for you,
are really simple as can be.
They are much like my own needs,
guidance requested each day,
to help me live fully,
following God’s wonderful ways.
You serve so many people,
with such varying needs,
I pray that God guides your
words and your deeds.
