"We will never forget"

Memorial Mass, tonight, 7:30 pm, SAA Church
-----------------------
Today is the sixth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States. In honor of today, we have placed a book which contains all of the names of those who lost their lives on 9/11/01 in the sanctuary of the Church and lit a candle next to it. It was a powerful experience to flip through some of the pages. I leave a very small portion of names here, and ask you to pray for all the victims and their families at some point today:

So many of us knew someone or knew about someone who perished on 9/11, but even if we didn’t, the loss of life was personally felt. I knew a young man who worked in the towers. I didn’t know him well; he was the fiancé of a friend, and I’d only met him a brief number of times. He was an intern with one of the brokerage firms. Fortunately, so many more we, my husband and I, knew there we safe that day, but the anxiety over their fate was extreme at the time.

In thinking about that day and on the young man I so briefly knew, I can’t help but think about John Donne’s words-

“No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less...any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind...”

The loss of potential that day was tremendous. We all lost a piece of ourselves then, not for the safety we felt was then and forever threatened, but because we loss so many brothers and sisters. We are all connected in a profound way, even if we don't ever make the personal acquaintance to one another.
